Rick burst into the kitchen. “It’s official.”
Eden stepped away from the stovetop, trying to school her expression so he wouldn’t see the surprise and worry in her face, in her eyes. “So we’re actually going.”
He reached into his pocket, pulled out four airline tickets and plonked them down on the bench. “Yep. Though I’ve factored in a bit of a European vacation, a sort of belated honeymoon, before I start the Norway secondment.”
She swallowed, then swallowed again. “How long will we be gone?”
“Unsure. As long as it takes. Management has been pretty flexible, surprisingly. They can’t have any idea about us or our link to Salvator.”
A film of moisture coated her eyes and she blinked in an attempt to stop the tears from falling. “Poor Salvator.”
Rick slipped his arms around her waist and kissed her forehead. “I know. I wish we could be at his funeral, but I’m sure he’d understand.”
Eden lifted her head and a couple of droplets trickled down her cheeks. “Yes… So when do we leave?”
“In two days.”
She stumbled back and stared up at him, swiping the tears from her face. “In two days? You could have given me a bit more notice! We’ve still got to pack—and how about the kids’ passports?”
“Don’t worry. I’ve got everything sorted.” And she didn’t doubt it. Since their Rick and Eden incarnation, he’d constantly demonstrated that he had everything under control.
She shook her head and smiled. “Of course you do. What was I thinking?”
“Exactly.” He pressed a gentle, loving kiss to her lips. “Speaking of the kids, how has Scarlett been?”
“Great, thank goodness. Introducing the animal blood has really made a difference…so far. She not only slept better last night but also went down for a nap this afternoon as well.”
“I did notice she seemed to settle a lot easier when I put them to bed.”
Eden adjusted his shirt collar. “Now I’m just hoping that she’ll start putting on weight and catch up to Blake.”
They spent the rest of the night planning for the upcoming trip and playing with the kids. Eden fell into bed, exhausted, and awoke to Rick lapping at her clitoris and an orgasm so intense that she almost shot off the bed. Before she could come down from her high, he crushed his mouth to hers and thrust his magnificent cock inside her, treating her to a bone-melting session of morning sex.
They snuggled afterward until Rick had to get up for work, and Eden drifted back to sleep…with no disturbances. For months, the first few hours of the day she’d spent in a sleep-deprivation-induced zombie state, trying to satiate Scarlett and stop her screaming.
But not anymore. Scarlett seemed to finally be on track, along with Eden and Rick’s incredible sex life, which should have been a relief. But how long would it last? They were about to uproot what she’d thought was a stable life that had turned out to be false—a lie—to relocate overseas, to expose themselves to higher, but necessary, risk.
The disruption of their routine to move into the danger zone had to have unsettling side effects, and to think otherwise would be delusional. However, they could no longer guarantee their safety if they stayed in Hobart. They had to go. Her past had taught her the importance of making the most of whatever time she had left with the people she loved.
In life, there were no definites outside of death and an obscene amount of taxes. She could wish all she wanted that things were different, but they weren’t, and living in a bubble of ignorance wouldn’t protect her and her family.
Dwelling on uncertainty and assumptions was pointless. She had to focus on the pressing here and now—on the facts—and deal with any changes as they arose.
Eden stretched and glanced at Rick’s alarm clock. Ten a.m.! She sat up, snatched her mobile off the bedside table and the notification light flashed, indicating she had a message. She couldn’t believe she hadn’t heard it come through. Those three orgasms Rick had coaxed from her body must have wiped her out.
She unlocked the sleep screen and found a text from Rick.
