A Witch advertising her heat cycle by scenting out can only lead to trouble, especially for Lothar Kaltenbrun. This time it isn’t the Witch burning—it’s him!
Lothar Kaltenbrun is trying to keep life on an even keel for himself and his younger brother, Telfor. After the murder of their parents, they are the only two pure bloods left of their Clan. A new scent is in the air—a Witch is advertising her heat cycle. Only very powerful Witches do this and it can only lead to trouble. Lothar knows that scent is an open invitation and may bring uninvited guests onto Kaltenbrun territory.
Lothar finds himself unable to resist the sexual pull of Jesse the Witch. When he ends up at her cabin, she asks him to drink her blue potion, ending the torment of her heat cycle, but he shifts and runs into the woods. Everyone knows never to trust a Witch.
But as Jesse’s magic captures his heart, he worries whether it’s a spell or true love…

“You can smell her too, can’t you?” Lothar pulled his snout in, his fall colors blending into the leaves of the vine maple. Telfor may be young, but, man, does he have a nose on him.
“Why can’t we go to her? She’s been scenting all morning. Don’t you want to have her? The Stumpp Clan will be on to it before we ever get over the hill.” Though they were able to communicate with spoken word even in wolf form, the two brothers usually communicated telepathically, hearing each other’s thoughts.
Although most of it came from his brother’s genitals, the idea had merit. Lothar just wasn’t convinced they’d be doing the right thing by running there and risking exposure. Any Witch crazy enough to advertise her heat either wanted free ingredients for her spells or something very strange was going on. Fast decisions on his part had led to far too much loss in their lives. Lothar had witnessed much over his twenty-three years. He wouldn’t allow Telfor to go running off to be grabbed by the tail and made into some sort of concoction. Never trust a Witch.
Telfor gave his whole body a rousing shake. His muscles rippled along, creating a wave that ran over his back, the silver of his youthful pelt shimmering with the movement. So young and eager—Lothar had been there once himself.
“I’m old enough to have sex.” Telfor stood solidly on all four paws, glaring in Lothar’s direction. Patches of light broke through the leafy canopy above, decorating his coat with patterns and shapes.
Lothar snorted. Old enough, indeed. He’d been a year younger when he’d lost his own innocence—but that hadn’t turned out very well. Talk about picking the wrong girl. The last thing he wanted was for Telfor to rush into anything. What he really needed was to heal from the loss. He signaled for Telfor to follow, going over to the small stream. The water went down easy, clear and cold, leaving him refreshed. He stepped aside, keeping lookout while Telfor drank his fill.
“Are you actively seeking trouble? Haven’t we been through enough?” Lothar’s ears stood erect, scanning for any new sounds. A movement caught his attention. Telfor’s pink tongue darted out and over his snout repeatedly. A single leaf had fallen from the canopy above, wet from the recent rain shower. It now lay stuck onto the end of Telfor’s nose. Lothar couldn’t help but find it funny.
“’Fraidy cat. You’re just scared. You’ve been way too cautious these past few years.” Telfor pawed at his face, finally ridding himself of the pesky leaf.
His words weren’t out a minute when Lothar jumped him, pinning his brother to the ground.
“Hey, what is that for?”
“You’ll end up being taken down if you aren’t careful. Remember what happened to our parents? You’d better get it in your head that we simply lucked out not being at home. And I don’t consider a few paltry years to be a significant amount of time—not now. I’m just trying to keep the rest of our Clan alive.” Lothar strode away, his tail held straight up, letting his brother know exactly who was in charge.
It was impossible to stay angry long. He loved his brother and would do anything to protect him. Now that their parents were gone, it was up to him to keep the Clan going.
“Hey, bro, why do you always say ‘the rest of our Clan’? We are the remaining two pure bloods left.” Telfor flattened his ears into the submissive position.
“I know, but it is my responsibility to mate and grow our Clan again.” Lothar trotted along, the ground cool beneath his pads.
Telfor didn’t need to shift for his brother to know there was a smile hiding under that muzzle.
“Why don’t we go see that Witch? She might be just what you need.”
“I’m supposed to find another Werewolf, not a Witch. Could you imagine if I mated with a Witch? I don’t even know what the hell we’d end up having. Shifting broom-riders? Were-hags?” Lothar shook his head, continuing on his way. Youth—always entertaining.
