Parts of the forest were dark, shadowy, cold places that the sunlight never graced. Here, the ground was bare. Muddy brown and barren. Thin shoots of foliage had keeled over and turned as brown as the earth where failed attempts at life had been made.
But in other places, on the paths Ginny walked with her horse, Solitaire, the forest was vibrant, green and full of life. Shards of sunlight hit the forest floor, creating glades of beauty that only to her eyes were privy to.
She headed towards the lake, her hands loosely clasping the reins as Solitaire followed their familiar path. Today, she wasn’t really paying much attention to the forest and the nature about her. All her concentration was turned inward at her indecision.
What am I going to do?
Her father was placing so much pressure on her to marry Michael and not giving her any chance to speak her opinion on the matter. Coming out here with Solitaire was a chance to escape all of the tension at home and have a chance to think—or scream at the unfairness of it all if she wanted. Michael was lovely. Of course, he was. He’d been her childhood friend then boyfriend before she’d left for university. They’d maintained a long-distance relationship whilst she’d studied. He’d promised to wait for her, and he had. But university had shown Ginny that there were other avenues her life could take, and running the stud farm and business at Red Oaks was only one of them.
The lake was a perfect place to think. Solitary. Cool. Silent. Its still, black surface asked nothing of her but admiration for its beauty.
And she always gave it. Sitting atop Solitaire for a few moments, she breathed in its scent and reflecting on its purpose.
She’d often thought the lake was like herself. Still and calm on the outside, but beneath, teeming with life that couldn’t be seen unless you were willing to enter its murky depths.
But today, she couldn’t concentrate.
The lake was not as quiet as it usually was.
Somewhere, off to one side, she heard noises. Rough, guttural noises that sounded like some sort of scuffle. Aware that sometimes travellers or gypsies settled in the area, she held onto her whip tightly and steered Solitaire over to a tree, tying the reins around a low branch then creeping through some undergrowth towards the noises.
And she saw something that made her gasp out loud.
Foxes or badgers she’d expected but not this.
