Kitty dropped her bag on the hot cement of the platform, spread her arms and took a deep breath. Even here, inside the railway station, she could smell the salt scent of the sea, carried on the warm breeze. Her friends and relatives back in the UK said she was mad to toss in a perfectly good job and a well-ordered life to travel halfway around the world in search of adventure. She grinned. They were stuck in the cold and rain, and she had a whole new world in front of her.
The sun etched sharp lines of light and shadow on the city streets. Even at six p.m. on an Australian summer evening, the heat felt solid, like walking into a wall. Twenty-four—or was it thirty-six hours ago?…she was way too tired to compute the changes in time zones—she’d been wrapped in a heavy coat, dragging her suitcase into Heathrow. Now a thin film of sweat slicked her shirt onto her skin.
The apartment she’d leased was supposed to be within walking distance of the railway station, so she pulled out the map, changed her grip on her case and set off, dragging it along behind her. After being cooped up inside a cocoon of glass and metal for so long, she was happy for the chance to stretch her legs and get the feel of her new home.
Fifteen minutes later she turned a corner into an avenue of exotic, red-flowered trees, their branches linked overhead, creating a cool, shaded tunnel. Another hundred metres and she’d arrived. The envelope containing the key sat in the letterbox, right where the agent had promised it would be. She fished it out and made her way up steps and onto the first floor.
Outside the door of flat three, she stopped, took a deep breath, plunged the key into the lock and turned it. She stepped into a furnished flat, more than big enough for her needs, with a living room, a separate galley kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom. From having been closed up all day, the rooms were hot and stuffy so she opened the windows. After stripping off her clothes, she stepped into the shower, letting the cool water run over her body, washing away the grime of travel. She dried herself on a fluffy white towel from the pile of supplied linen, threw a sheet onto the bed, fell face first onto it and slept.

When she awoke thirteen hours later, she thought about all the things she needed—food, a local SIM card and a host of other practical things, but the beach was only four blocks away. Shopping was shopping, wherever you happened to be. The beach was the thing she’d dreamt about when she was back home—crystal clear water, golden sand and warmth…glorious warmth. The shopping could wait. Kitty couldn’t.
She hesitated at the steps that led down to the shore. A crowd of teenagers swept past her, each one of them bending to pull the shoes from their feet in order to squeak barefoot across the sand.
Assuming that was how it was done, Kitty bent from the knees—because there was no way she was going to shove her middle-aged bum up in the air for people to snigger at—kicked off her leather sandals and put them in her bag. She plodded down the stairs to take her first step onto an Australian beach…
