To what extent did your father’s encouragement spur you on to write more?
Well, he enabled me by giving me that old typewriter - and a never-ending supply of paper, bless him. Both he and my mum let me have free rein, once my regular homework was done, though Mum always wanted me to write the fluffy romance short stories she used to read in her magazines. I think they spent a fair bit of time wondering what kind of cuckoo's egg I'd hatched from.
